Definition of Milling Machine
It is a machine used in manufacturing industries which is used to remove unnecessary metals from the work piece. Revolving cutter is used to remove this unnecessary metals. Revolving cutter is also called milling cutter. Milling Machine is employed to machined the rough, flat and irregular surfaces. all machining operation can be done by feeding the work piece against the milling cutter. It is also called muti-tasking machine which capable of milling and turning the material.

Principal of Milling Machine

The workpiece is hold on machine worktable. The movement of table will controls the feed of workpiece against rotating milling cutter. The milling cutter is located on a spindle and rotate at high speed. cutter does not allowed any other motion Except its rotation motion. As the workpiece feed to the milling cutter, the cutter teeth remove unnecessary material of metal from the surface of workpiece and production of desired shape takeplace.

Construction of Milling Machine

The main component of the milling machine is base, Column, Knee, Saddle, Table, Power feed Mechanism, Overarm, spindle, Arbor Support, Ram & Elevating Screw. we will learn about each part of the milling machine and its function.
  1. Base: It is the foundation of the Milling machine where all other component are attached/placed over it. As it carries entire load of the machine so it require high compressive strength. cast iron is used to made a base to obtain a required strength. it also work as a reservoir for a cutting fluid.
  2. Column: Column is located on the base vertically. It provide support to knee, table etc. Column is the hollow member which consist of driving gear and motor to rotate the spindle. It act as a housing for all driving mechanism for the table feed and spindle.
  3. Knee: Knee is a rigid casting which is mounted on front face of column. Knee always support the saddle and table. The knee always move in vertical direction along the guide way. This motion allow to adjust the distance between Milling cutter and work piece, this adjustment can be done manually or automatically by moving the elevating screw provided below the knee.
  4. Saddle: The saddle is placed on the knee. It act as middle part between knee and table. Saddle always move in & out (crosswise direction) on the guide way. the main function of saddle is to provide horizontal motion to the workpiece. saddle is also made up of cast iron.
  5. Table: Table located on the guide way in the spindle. table provide the support to workpiece. it is also made up of cast iron. its top surface carries a T slot to fix the workpiece using clamping bolt The table is move is three direction. vertical motion is controlled by adjusting the knee. cross motion is controlled by moving the saddle in relation to knee. horizontal motion provided by hand wheel which is fitted on side of the feed screw.
  6. Overarm: The Overarm is Located at the top of the column. It is made up if cast iron. It support the arbor. it consist of cylindrical bars which slide through Column hole.
  7. Arbor support: The arbor support is attached to Overarm. it is clamped at any location on Overarm. The arbor nothing but machined shaft that holds & drives the milling cutters. The function of Arbor support is to align & support various arbors.
  8. Elevating screw: The vertical movement of the knee & table is controlled by the elevating screw.  Elevating screw is operated Manually or automatic feed.
  9. Milling Head: The upper section of milling machine is called Milling Head.It contain Driving motor, spindle & other controlling mechanism.
  10. Ram: Ram connect the milling head to the column of milling machine. the ram can able to move transversely in and out over column by operating hand lever.

Different Type of Milling Machine

The two main configurations of these milling machining operations would be the kinds of milling machines. All these will be the vertical mill and also the horizontal mill. They are further discussed here:

1. Vertical Milling Machine
The vertical mill includes a vertically organized spindle axis and rotate by remaining in precisely the exact same axis. The spindle may also be prolonged and executing acts like cutting and drilling. Vertical mill has two additional categories too: turret mill and bed mill. The turret mill has a table which moves perpendicularly and parallel to the spindle axis so as to decrease the material. The spindle is also, nevertheless, stationary. Two cutting edge methods can be carried out with this by simply transferring the knee and by lowering or increasing the quill.

2. Horizontal Milling Machines

The horizontal mill is also the same cutter but their cutters are put on a horizontal arbor. A good deal of horizontal mills have rotary tables that assist with milling in a variety of angles. These tables are known as the worldwide tables. Aside from that all of the tools which are employed at a vertical mill may also be utilized from the horizontal mill.

3. Knee-Type Milling MachineThe milling machine which consist of knee at the middle is called knee-type milling machine.
4. Ram-Type Milling MachineA milling machine which consist of ram at the top of the column is called ram type milling machine.

Advantage of Milling Machine

  • Metal can be removed with high speed.
  • Milling machine can  incline in any angle while cutting.
  • milling machine can able to do multiple cut simultaneously.
  • Best for Production of small batches & individual piece.
  • Complex shape can easily produced.
  • It reduces the human error.

Dis-advantage of Milling Machine


  • Not good at cutting cut in radial direction.
  • Large Space requirement.
  • High Initial cost.
  • Maintenance is high than other processes.


Application of Milling Machine


  • Milling Machine can be used for manufacturing gear.
  • used to machined Flat as well as irregular surface.
  • Used to produce slots & groove.
  • used to cut material with greater accuracy & faster rate.
