What is Topology?

What are the topology and its type ? (What is Topology)..

The topology is called the shape or layout of the network. How the different nodes of the network are connected to each other and how to establish communication with each other, the topology determines the network topology is physical or logical. The method of connecting computers and data flow in it is called topology. Topology is the geometric arrangement of computers in a network.

                          Types of Topology

Network topology is generally of the following types:

  • Ring Topology
  • Bus Topology
  • Star Topology
  • Mesh Topology
  • Tree Topology

Ring Topology

There is no host, main or controlling computer in this computer. In this, all computers are connected in a circular shape, each computer is connected to its subordinate computer, but there is no computer owner in it. It is also called Circular.

In the ring network, data is exchanged at a normal speed and on receiving the data from one computer to another computer, other computers in the middle have to determine whether the said data is for them or No. If this data is not for that, then that data is passed to another computer.

Advantages -

This network works more efficiently, because there is no host (Controlling Computer) in it.
It is more reliable than Star, as it does not depend on any one computer.

If one line or computer of this network stops working, then work can be done by the other direction line.

Disadvantages -

Its speed depends on the computers installed in the network. If the computer is low then the speed is high and if the number of computers is high then the speed is low.

This is less common than the Star network, as it requires very complex software to work on this network.

Bus Topology

Bus topology uses the same cable and all computers are connected to the same wire in the same sequence. A special type of device is installed at the beginning and end of the wire which is called Terminator. Its function is to control the signals.

Advantages -

Installing the bus topology is easy
In this, less cable is useful compared to star and tree topology.

Disadvantages -

All the data communication stops due to any one computer malfunction.
It is relatively difficult to connect a computer later.

Star Topology

This network consists of a host computer which is directly connected to various local computers. Local computers are not connected to each other, they are connected to each other by the host computer. The entire computer is controlled by the host computer.

Advantages -

In this network topology, connecting a host computer to a computer reduces the cost of laying the line.

In this, increasing the number of local computers, the speed of exchange of information from one computer to another computer is not affected, its working speed decreases because there is only a host computer between two computers.

If a local computer malfunctions, the rest of the network is not affected by it.

Disadvantages -

This entire system depends on the host computer. If the host computer fails, then the entire network fails.

Mesh Topology

Mesh topology is also called Mesh Network or Mesh Network. Mesh is a network topology in which devices are connected to many additional interconnections between network nodes (Nodes). That is, in the mesh topology, each node is connected to all other nodes of the network.

In mesh topology, all computers are connected to each other and they can easily exchange their information because they are connected to each other. It does not have any host computer.

Tree Topology

In tree topology, the characteristics of both star and bus topology are present. It has a host computer like the star topology and like a bus topology all the computers are connected by a single cable. This network looks like a tree.

Advantages -

A point wire is laid for each segment.
Many hardware and software vendors are supported.

Disadvantages -

The total length of each segment is limited by the wire used.
If the backbone line is broken then the entire segment stops.
Compared to other topologies, it is difficult to lay the wire in it and configure it.

Simple Summary..

  • The topology is called the shape or layout of the network. In this, the method of connecting computers and the data flow in it is called topology.
  • There are five types of topology. Ring, Bus, Star, Tree, Mesh Topology.
  • There is no host, main or controlling computer in the ring topology. In it all computers are fitted in a circular shape.
  • Bus topology uses the same cable and all computers are connected to the same wire in the same sequence.
  • The star topology consists of a host computer which is directly connected to various local computers. Local computers are not connected to each other.
  • In mesh topology, all computers are connected to each other and they can easily exchange their information because they are connected to each other.
  • In tree topology, the characteristics of both star and bus topology are present.
